7.6 (5 个评分) 作者: Shirley Jackson Penguin Classics 2006 - 11
It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, the lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.

Jackson’s “hauntedness” is in her troubled protagonist, not in the actual house—there is the possibility that a toxic individual is a contagion to others, and to herself.

Taking readers deep into a labyrinth of dark neurosis, "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" is a deliciously unsettling novel about a perverse, isolated, and possibly murderous family and the struggle that ensues when a cousin arrives at their estate.

What a weird little book. Things you can always find in her stories: troubled protagonist, unreliable narrator, the unexpected menace. 她的长篇和短篇气质还是有些不同的,比起这本我还是更喜欢The Haunting of Hill House,相似的是字里行间挥之不去的claustrophobia和yearning。Audible听完,补了Jonathan Lethem的序。
