转学到南葛小学的大空翼是一个热爱足球的少年，他在此结识了石崎、大姐头等一好友，还邂逅了最初的对手修哲小学的若林源三。热爱足球的孩子们齐聚求日本少年足球大赛，大空翼、若林、三杉淳、立花兄弟、若岛津健、日向小次郎等极具天赋的足球少年相继崭露头角，从小学到中学，这群孩子在球场上不断比拼磨练，相互赶超，渐渐成为了日本足球新生代的骨干。他们参加世青赛，远征欧罗巴，与当今世界上各路强者对决，跟昂首阔步迈近了世界杯的赛场……
本片根据高桥阳一同名漫画改编，囊括“小学生篇”、“中学生篇”、“ジュニアユース篇”、“Road to 2002”等4个部分，共52话。
