Though their sound blends everything from dub to reggae to Middle Eastern folk, Washington, DC’s own Thievery Corporation developed in the tradition of Bossa Nova. They’ll return to those roots with the release of their seventh studio album, Saudade, due out April 1st their own ESL Music label.
Reacquainting themselves with Brazilian legends like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gal Costa, and Luis Bonfá, the core duo of DJs Rob Garza and Eric Hilton sought to create a “delicate yet deeply sensuous sound”, according to a press release. (“Saudade” is the Portuguese word for “contented melancholy” or “the presence of absence.”) Like 2011′s Culture of Fear, the album is packed with guest contributors, including U.N.K.L.E., Argentine singer Federico Aubele, Brazilian percussionist Roberto Santos, and longtime Thievery cohort LouLou Ghelichkhani.
“We always try to progress into something different and stretch our musical chops, and taking a whole album to dive into this one sound seemed like a really great way to do that,” said Eric Hilton in an issued statement. Added Rob Garza, “It’s a bit of a departure for us, but at the same time these are our roots, this is what brought us together. It’s us coming full circle from electronic music back to something organic before we move on to our next chapter.”
Our first taste of the “very feminine record” comes with “Depth Of My Soul”, a rich and dramatic jazz-tune. Feeling at home in an old movie or a cocktail lounge, guest vocalist Shana Halligan passionately croons over luxuriant strings and vibrant orchestration. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Garza said the song has lots of “hidden meanings, adding, “It’s kind of inspired by love, but it’s also inspired by psychedelic moments musically from all types of soundtracks. I appreciate a lot of films from that era, just the look, the stylings, the locations, everything.”

Nitin Sawhney CBE (/ˈnɪtɪn ˈsɔːni/; born 1964) is a British musician, producer and composer, as well as former comic actor. A recipient of the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement award in 2017, his work combines Asian and other worldwide influences with elements of jazz and electronica and often explores themes such as multiculturalism, politics, and spirituality. Sawhney is also active in the promotion of arts and cultural matters, and is a patron of numerous film festivals, venues, and educational institutions.

Sotto was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec and is a self-taught musician with a background in Art History.

FiFi Rong independent artist, whom we across online give us a first taste of her new EP album. Which she has titled ‘Next Pursuit’, the album has been described as Dark, Underground and Raw. Listening to the EP was definitely a new experience for us, the album really does have eery feel to it, haunting but beautiful.
On ‘Next Pursuit’ Fifi comments: ” I found myself musically and personally through the making of my first album ‘Wrong’. ‘Next Pursuit’ is a reinforcement of who I am, and a platform for me to set out on a musical journey toward the future and grow with it, always thriving to retain the freedom of making something new, exciting and better in one way or another.”
1st – Next Pursuit (feat. Sadsic)
The first single from the EP of the album, sets the tone of it all. It starts of quit quiet, she begins to tell us that she’s busy with her next pursuit. In the background you can hear the trip of the slow drum, with high pitched synths making it sound rather dark. We love Fifi voices in this, its so smooth and deep, you could really imagine this in a smoke filled room with people sipping Champagne.
2nd – Intimacy
The next song in the album, slows right down, like a creepy Marilyn Monroe. Our favourite part of the song is where you can just hear the electric guitar playing softly and slowly. The whole song has this relaxing effect on you, almost hypnotic, very beautiful.
3rd – Breathless (ft. OP9)
the 3rd in the album, goes super relaxed, you can imagine this song used for a horror film trailer. Fifi sings this song in her native tongue, even though we can’t really tell what she’s saying, it’s rather chilling. This is pure underground sound right there, just simply amazing an experimental. Almost like a conceptual artist, this song really reels you in, like a new hybrid.
4th – Wishes’ Fault
the next song in the album goes more uptempo as you can in this theme, at least the song seems more hopefully. In the chorus she sings “1,2,3″ which has to be our favourite part, as the song gets really whimsical and full of fantasy. You can really hear the electronica in this song, although is very alternative to traditional electronica, which we also adore.
5th – Cold in You.
the 5th song in the album goes in the opposite direction, goes completely acoustic. In this song we get to hear the purity of Fifi’s singing ability, it really is a thing of a beauty. This song a lot of people will identify with, its a whimsical breakup, which we mean in the way she sings. Its now a power house song, its more melodic and thoughtful, her voice just echoes into your ears.
Final – Equality (feat. Sadsic)
Finally but not least this track takes us 360, back to the albums theme. Its really dark, trippy and underground, the song covers about how everyones the same. In the sense of playing games with people hearts and emotions, or thats the feeling we get from this song. As the music in the background wobbles and slightly screeches, it really does set up another haunting song.
Overall the album has this feeling of continuity, its very pleasurable to listen to, well if it’s your scene anyway. I think this album will really set her apart from other artists, establishing herself in what we would say ‘Alternative’ music. Lots of tortured souls I imagine identify with her, that and the album tells you how she personally feels.
