Cesaria Evora 1941年出生于非洲岛国佛得角的Mindelo港，从小就在父亲的引导下对音乐产生了浓厚的兴趣。十几岁的时候她便在家乡当地的酒吧和过往停靠的货船上进行表演，一方面因此谋生，另一方面也借以发泄她长期生活的压抑与不愉快。她演唱的方式叫"Morna"（用克里澳尔-葡萄牙语演唱，属于黑人灵魂乐的一种,和布鲁斯类似，都是表达生命的苦难的音乐形式。）,混合了伤感的民歌曲调和吉他、小提琴、黑管悲伤的乐音，讲述佛得角苦难的历史和奴隶贸易。或许因为长期接触不同文化人种(水手和白人殖民者)与生活的历练，她的歌唱不但涵盖法语/ 葡萄牙语的不同表达媒介, 歌声中的低吟与浑厚微婉更透露出绝望中向前瞻望的乐观气息。艾芙拉的歌声浑圆暗哑，她的演唱总是以情见长，无论是平淡的民谣还是欢快的舞曲，她总是能够演绎得亲切动人，真得像极了一个关爱你的祖母，用循循善诱的倾诉来化解你胸中的郁闷和愁结，虽然她并不像有些爵士女歌手能将高音唱得地动山摇，但她的声音却总是尤如风笛的气囊那样绵绵不绝的用乐符将你的身心包围，哪怕是她的歌声里总是含着忧郁，在这样的表达里也会变出一点微甜的味道来。由于在舞台上一贯赤脚，以表达对贫穷的妇女儿童的支持，她被人们称为"赤脚女歌王"
