Mars wrote the song with K'naan and his production team The Smeezingtons, who also produced the track. Musically, "The Lazy Song" displays influences of roots reggae and jawaiian music.

Mars wrote the song with his production team The Smeezingtons, who also produced the track. "Marry You" incorporates influences of Reggae and R&B Lyrically, the song sees Mars singing about a spontaneous marriage idea. It received generally mixed reviews from most of the critics, with some complimenting its production and Mars' vocals on the song.
Although it was not released as a single in the U.S., the song charted at number eighty-five on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number twenty-four on the Canadian Hot 100. It also peaked at number eight in Australia and at number eleven in the United Kingdom. In November 2010, "Marry You" was covered on the television show, Glee.

It was written by Mars, and Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine of production team The Smeezingtons, who also handled the song's production. The song has been released as a radio single in Australia and New Zealand, serving as the overall fifth single from Doo-Wops & Hooligans. It has also received strong airplay from popular Sydney FM station Hope 1032 (2CBA).

The song peaked at number 19 on the UK Singles Chart on October 30, 2011, after Mars performed the song on The X Factor results show on October 30, 2011. Following the performance, the song was made available as a promotional single on the iTunes Store for 59p.
