从基层上看去，中国社会是乡土性的。我说中国社会的基层是乡土性的，那是因为我考虑到从这基层上曾长出一层比较上和乡土基层不完全相同的社会。当前的世界人，我们到处可以看见男女们互相结合成夫妇，生出孩子来，共同把孩子抚育成人。这一套活动我将称之为生育制度。生育制度是个新名词，因之我得先说明一下这名词的意思。
