The Small and the Mighty: Twelve Unsung Americans Who Changed the Course of History, from the Founding to the Civil Rights Movement Goodreads 豆瓣
作者: Sharon McMahon Thesis 2024 - 9 其它标题: The Small and the Mighty
America’s favorite government teacher offers thrilling, heartfelt stories of ordinary American heroes. Most pundits and historians sell a dangerously naïve version of the American story—either praising its most consequential figures uncritically or criticizing them unfairly. Sharon McMahon believes the truth is more human. In her debut book The Small and the Mighty, she tells the inpiring stories of twelve Americans--regular people with human foibles--whose extraordinary heroism in the face of mounting trials created the character of our country. With the same clarity and candor that's earned her millions of fans, McMahon follows the daughter of formerly enslaved parents who sparked a reformation in Black education, a Japanese immigrant who nearly died in combat and became a consequential Senator, and even the electrician who saved her husband’s life. Her unforgettable prose and meticulous research tell the story of America from the perspective of the unsung heroes whose devotion to their country will restore your faith in the American dream. The portraits of our nation’s most improbable champions, innovators, and rebels in this book celebrate the United States and reveal our common humanity. The Small and the Mighty is the encouragement we all need in an age of doomscrolling and division.

[有聲書] 歷史故事也還好,就是對 “they make this country Great” 和國旗太下頭。USA hated and still hates Them.

Palmyra Street 豆瓣 Goodreads
作者: Jana Dennis Soft Skull Press 2005 - 10
Located in the heart of Mid-City near the new streetcar line, Palmyra Street is rich with typical and not-so-typical New Orleans stories. One of the city’s most diverse blocks, its residents represent a mix of races, cultures, and classes. Jana Dennis’s Palmyra Street pays homage to this fascinating neighborhood through interviews, photographs, and vignettes. A sharp observer with an eloquent voice, she paints an intriguing portrait of a block in flux, where the new neighbors sometimes clash with the old, but where harmony is quickly restored through simple acts of kindness. Readers meet Jana’s generous mother, the heart and soul of the neighborhood, and watch as the family forms a community not only on their block, but also through their participation in church life and the Golden Arrows Mardi Gras Indian Tribe. The residents of Palmyra Street are a testament to New Orleans’s community spirit, offering hope for a vibrant future.

書中最後一位受訪者Mark關於這座城市的一句話說得特別好:“It's pristine in its dirtiness.”……Nowhere else in the world.
