HOOPTOBER NINE! NIGHT THIRTEEN! Amazing that this movie isn't as widely talked about as Browning's other horror films, it's amazingly effective in less than an hour's running time. The characters are sketched in economical detail but are nonetheless fully-formed, with Chaney and Crawford's performances filling in the blanks on their relationships and inner lives. Chaney in particular does an incredible job of making Alonzo both pitiable and despicable, sometimes within the very same scene.
