HOOPTOBER ORIGINS 2.0 NIGHT TWO: I'd shied away from reading/watching this one because my mental image of this story (and in turn the movie) was quite a bit more lurid than it was in actual practice. And I'm happy that Mike Flanagan chose to put the spotlight on Carla Gugino's performance rather than the more unpleasant plot aspects. And for maybe the first 2/3rds I found it to be a pretty zippy update on "The Pit & The Pendulum", with an enjoyable room-escape/survival puzzle at its center, and some nicely executed psychological business with Gerald continuing to haunt/taunt the main character throughout. It's when we get to the final stretch and the completely out-of-nowhere ending that the movie got a little too silly for me, but on balance I liked this one OK.
