HOOPTOBER ORIGINS 2.0 NIGHT NINE: If I hadn't known that this was Ti West's follow-up to the great HOUSE OF THE DEVIL and THE INNKEEPERS, I would have honestly assumed that it was one of his earlier films. Maybe it's the spottily implemented found-footage conceit or the overall Eli Roth/Vice TV edgebro atmosphere, but it just feels like a less stylistically mature work by West. It feels in some ways like West making concessions to the dominant mode of 2000s horror, since his previous slow-burners hadn't quite come into style yet. Character actor Gene Jones gives a fine performance, but it wasn't quite enough for me to recommend this one over West's other films.
