𝖍𝖔𝖔𝖕𝖙𝖔𝖇𝖊𝖗 𝖝 𝖓𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙 𝖙𝖜𝖊𝖓𝖙𝖞-𝖙𝖍𝖗𝖊𝖊: Craven was definitely picking up on something in the post-Sixties/post-Manson murders zeitgeist with this movie, but aside from that I didn't find this as compelling as I would have liked. Like a lot of shock-horror movies of the time, it asks you to sit through scenes staged like a 70s variety show skit alongside scenes depicting fairly nasty (at least for the time) violence, gore, torture, and rape. Compared to something like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre just a few years later, this feels strangely glib in its treatment of violence.
