FLOPUARY #1 + 2024 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 19: USA UP ALL NIGHT WEEK I sincerely have no idea what anybody involved with this movie thought it was going to be when they were making it, and doubt that any two of them -- not star Dan Aykroyd, director Michael Pressman, nor the three credited screenwriters -- agreed on that subject at any one time. Sandwiched chronologically between two generation-defining movies like Blues Brothers and Ghostbusters, it's genuinely painful to see Dan Aykroyd figuratively/literally flailing around in this film, while never quite finding the comic reality of either his nerdy prof persona or the utter trainwreck of a title character. At the very least, Fran Drescher, Lynn Whitfield, Donna Dixon, and Lydia Lei get the chance to be extremely charming as the four highly sanitized sex workers Aykroyd takes charge of. The entire movie is weirdly vague on the whole subject of pimps and prostitution, especially given that it's an R-rated '80s comedy. Bumped up my rating a half star for the pretty great Devo theme song.
