HOOPTOBER 3.0 NIGHT FOUR: Giving this one ⭐⭐⭐ based purely on Hazanavicius having the good sense to literally use the same script as the ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 original Japanese version (with some notable additions, a couple of which actually work) but by and large this just doesn't have the same feeling of pure inspiration. One of the miracles of the original film is how it effectively fooled viewers into underestimating the craft of the largely-amateur team of filmmakers behind it, without tipping its hand on any of the delightful twists and reveals over its runtime. By contrast FINAL CUT/COUPEZ! comes with an enviable professional pedigree, coming from the Oscar-winning director and lead actress of 2011's THE ARTIST. Starting with the casting and choice of locations, it all looks just a little bit too put-together to really capture the "fast/cheap/average" ethos of ONE CUT, and that's a shame. There's also the puzzling decision to set the film in the same apparent universe as the original ONE CUT, while keeping nearly every aspect of the film-around-the-film nearly the same. It adds an extra layer of cross-cultural weirdness to the first 30 minutes, but arguably that's where Hazanavicius should have let his own inventiveness take over by imagining a very different behind-the-scenes story.
