HOOPTOBER 3.0 NIGHT TWENTY-THREE: I'll admit to still being slightly uneasy about the narrative integrity of The Blair Witch Project as a found-footage horror movie (inspired by faux documentary-horror films like The Legend of Boggy Creek), for no other reason than that I still don't find the actual footage taken by the actors to be all that compelling or scary on its own. But taken along with the original Blair Witch documentary TV special that came out in advance of the film, I'm prepared to bump it up about a half-star from my previous reviews of it. I feel like it's absolutely NECESSARY context to understand why any of the stuff going on is SCARY instead of simply weird or coincidental, and the filmmakers missed a trick not incorporating the special's historical material into the text of the theatrical version. As it is, it's still just half of the movie it was clearly trying to be.
