HOOPTOBER 3.0 NIGHT THIRTY: Having finally gotten around to this one after years of debating whether to watch the US remake first or track down the German original, I can honestly say that I'm glad I went with the latter. Haneke is absolutely uncompromising in his depiction of the cold-bloodedness of the home invaders, while also having the delicacy to keep the majority of the bloodshed and carnage just out of frame and focusing on the family's *reactions* rather than the gore. There's one notable exception that occurs late in the film, and it's clearly meant to bait the audience into eagerly accepting a righteously violent resolution that never comes.
