HOOPTOBER 4.0 NIGHT EIGHT: Given that the original '70s film was a pretty uninspired (and I would argue wildly misogynist) TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE ripoff, one might be compelled to question why Tobe Hooper of all the filmmakers bothered to remake it 25 years later. Upon actually watching it though, in some ways it feels like Hooper's measured and reasoned response to that film, in that his version is better in basically every respect, adding layers of mystery and intrigue to what was previously a pretty dull straightforward slasher concept. Not in the league of his best work by a wide margin, but a fun late-career comeback that showed he still had the skills.
