2025 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 38: NEW WORLD PICTURES WEEK A junky ALIEN rip-off that occasionally feels like a less-junky ALIEN ripoff thanks to some sorta decent production design and photography, but ultimately weighed down by mostly aimless scripting and languid, repetitive pacing, but also some of the worst choices for sound effects cues I've ever heard. It throws a whole bunch of wildly divergent '70s space-opera and horror tropes at a wall without really committing to any of them; The cast is more or less evenly split between the utterly colorless leads (Edward Albert, Erin Moran, and Mr. Red Shoe Diaries himself, Zalman King) and some fantastic character actors (Grace Zabriskie, Robert Englund, Sid Haig and Ray Walston, thank you all for your service), with only the latter really making any kind of impression. This movie's kind of infamous for the scene (much more tastefully depicted in the poster, which does not resemble the actual sequence at all) where Taaffe O’Connell gets killed by a crummy-looking ALIEN ripoff slimy worm monster and is shot as a rape sequence. It's less offensive in and of itself, than for how gratuitous it feels in the context of the rest of the film, and how it's treated as a throwaway death rather than an escalation of the character stakes. It's the worst part of the movie by far, and definitely not a reason to watch. I'd forgotten that this movie also includes a rookie pre-TERMINATOR (even pre-PIRANHA II) James Cameron as 2nd Unit Director; It is worth noting that he basically remade this movie in a far superior form as ALIENS.
