2022 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 1: DONALD G. JACKSON WEEK Although this one carries several of Donald Jackson's trademark flourishes (poorly-layered background music, dad-jokey dialogue, drastically underlit night scenes) there's something weirdly compelling about this one. Part of it is how desperately dorky the whole satanic-cult plot is, like something concocted by Jackson and his weekly D&D circle. The main villain is literally the kind of hockey-haired burnout we all knew in high school who claimed to know where he could get, like real ninja weapons, and the "teen" protagonists all feel like different flavors of Midwestern stoner nerd. Speaking of nerds, in researching this movie I discovered that one of the main characters is played by '70s Marvel Comics artist Val Mayerik, the co-creator of Howard the Duck and Man-Thing. Texas Chainsaw Massacre star Gunnar Hansen (aka Leatherface) shows up for one scene as an occult expert, which makes me wonder if Hansen actually had an agent at this point in his career.
