#14: Batman Returns (DVD) I've been attempting to limit myself to few if any movies that I've already seen, but I figured that instituting a 10-year rule was good enough here. I'm not sure I've watched this since it came out on VHS. As others have observed, it's not a particularly good Batman movie, but it is an excellent Tim Burton movie. I remembered that the movie doesn't exactly center on Batman, but was shocked to notice that Michael Keaton doesn't even get any lines until 40 minutes in. Appreciated the obvious early-90s vintage riffing on Trump (see also Gremlins 2) vis a vis Walken as Schreck, and the attempt at introducing feminist themes to action cinema with Pfeiffer's Catwoman. I'm still not entirely clear on how I feel about Devito as Penguin, I feel like there could have been more that they could have gotten out of that version of the character. So much of his development throughout the film was so shorthanded, that it was hard to get a handle on how much he was a misunderstood outcast, and how much he was a vile monster. I think Burton wanted him to be more sympathetic than what we got in the finished product.
