a review of 塞尔玛

8/28: Selma (Hulu) I'm kicking myself right now for not finding the time to catch this one until now. It's literally that good, and it makes me angry now that I was skeptical towards it because of my vague distaste for historical biopics. I WAS WRONG. David Oyelowo does something truly incredible here, in that he made me feel the magnetism and intensity of Dr. King but also his deep humanity and vulnerability. One of my favorite moments comes early on, when he and Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King are talking in the kitchen about their activism. As they discuss events that will end up shaking the world, there's the great Dr. King, changing the bag on the under-sink trash can like a regular, responsible adult. It's an early reminder that this titan of the 20th century was ultimately just a man, and underlines the power of the difference that just one ordinary person can make. Even if they'd never filmed the marches across the Pettus Bridge, just that little bit of staging would have justified the film for me.
