a review of 星际撞车

#98 (April 8/30) (This review is of the MST3K version, now on Netflix) Really enjoyed this one! As Star Wars knockoffs go, this one isn't too derivative, fake lightsabers or no. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of a far less ambitious/goofy Barbarella, for reasons that don't strictly involve Caroline Munro's space bikini (but definitely do involve it). The stop-motion bits with the colossal Amazon robot and the skeletal robot guards feel like equal parts shameless ripoff and loving homage to Ray Harryhausen, and the kooky characters reminded me a lot of Flash Gordon and Silver Age Marvel Comics. The final host segment before credits perhaps the most wonderfully random bit of mayhem we've had this season, and the Mads' reaction is perfect. The celebrity cameo (no spoilers) is a little bit underwhelming this time, but considering that Joel and the celeb-in-question go way back together, I'll go along with it for sentimental reasons.
