2019 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 8: BLEEDING SKULL WEEK I might have more to add to this review later, but straight off the dome I thought there were a couple of interesting things about this movie:
- It embraces pretty much all of the slasher genre conventions of that time, but unlike Halloween or Friday the 13th, we see the killer's face throughout nearly the entire film. We only find out his motives and philosophy towards the end, but otherwise he's pretty much just a basic double-denim white dude, which in some ways might be the scariest threat of all.
- Similarly, instead of going with the "final girl" plot structure where the killer acts as a sorting device to eliminate the less virtuous characters, leaving one character of exemplary moral constitution to kill the killer, the movie takes a "sisterhood is powerful" approach. In the final minutes, the entire surviving cast (all female) team up to symbolically castrate, stab, drown, and finally impale the killer. Plenty of teens get chopped and skewered up to that point, but the movie does make a point of making the final showdown a team effort with women specifically defending women.
