2019 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 31: BLAXPLOITATION WEEK This is another one that I think I'm going to have to watch again to really gauge how I feel about it, but my initial impression is that it's amazing how well this movie works thematically considering that much of the time it feels like it barely holds together on a narrative level. The first few minutes are comprised of puzzling character introductions and an uneasy mix of looped dialogue and narration, which soon gives way to the gothic love story between the title characters, told in a genuinely intriguing hallucinatory style. I'm honestly amazed that more modern vampire films haven't tried to copy this movie's final sequence, in which Duane Jones' Hess finds his ultimate redemption as well as sweet oblivion in the hands of the church.
