2019 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 32: JOHN WOO WEEK I became a fan of John Woo's the same way most people my age did in the '90s: Through his Hong Kong "heroic bloodshed" movies with Chow Yun-Fat and his later over the top Hollywood action films like Broken Arrow and Face/Off. So I knew very little about his early forays into the wuxia swordplay/martial arts genre until now. Truth be told, it's pretty much your basic swordfighting western without much that makes it feel particularly unique beyond the frequent flashes of Woo's signature kinetic directorial style, which keeps things moving along at a good clip over its nearly two hour runtime.
