HOOPTOBER, NIGHT TEN: Watching this one as a double feature with along with Nightmare on Elm Street 4, this one also comes across as a post-peak entry in the Jason franchise. Although I've always liked the concept of Tommy Jarvis as the second trilogy's protagonist, it seems like they never quite figured out how to make him either compelling or ambiguous. He starts this movie in full damaged-survivor mode before shifting into a more squarely heroic role only a few scenes later. Although they manage to avoid making this one feel like as much of a retread of the previous films as some of the earlier sequels, in some ways it almost feels like a sanitized version of the franchise. The sex and violence is noticeably toned down from earlier entries; if memory serves, this is also the first one where there are actual children at the summer camp, which theoretically increases the threat potential but in practice actually softens it, so we aren't forced to watch little kids getting sliced and diced.
