a review of 猩红山峰

2020 Cult Movie Challenge Week 20: Haunted House Week OK, I dug this one. Letterboxd reviews are really all over the map, and I feel like maybe some people just weren't willing to meet the movie halfway. And the concept that it isn't "really" horror is laughable on its face. There's one or two minor fake outs on the way to the big reveal that feel like something might have been left over from a discarded draft or alternate cut. But I'm happy to forget about those and just focus on the super-saturated Technicolor-style color palette and sets and atmosphere. This to me feels like a crucial piece I'd been missing in the context of all of the Gothic-inspired/female-centered movies of the last few years, like Mother! and Suspiria '18 and even Portrait of a Lady on Fire. I guess we're in the midst of a revival, and I just didn' t notice until now.
