Hooptober Night Twelve: I know I'm way late to the party on this one, but I was blown away with how good Natalie Portman is in this movie. Her work in this feels personal in a couple of different way, both in terms of embodying the pressures put on women in creative fields while also I think serving as a kind of metacommentary on her career up to that point. Because I think before her Best Actress win there was a sense that she was naturally talented, but perhaps a bit too "perfect" in some of her performances, and here you can see both the character and Portman straining against that perception, and it completely pays off.
