活跳尸2 - 评论

Hooptober, Night Thirty-one: There was a moment about fifteen minutes from the end where I thought to myself "Hey, this Re-Animator sequel directed by the guy who also made Society seems strangely restrained in terms of truly disturbing gore FX", and then suddenly in came all of the KNB/Screaming Mad George/etc creatures promised in the opening credits and I was happy to be wrong. It's not quite as fun or focused as the original, but I appreciated:

  1. The increasingly batshit (ahem) transformations of Dr. Hill.
  2. How the movie uses the Bride metaphor to double down and comment further on West's shitty incel tendencies, WRT his attempts to get Cain to recommit to rebuilding his dead fiancee instead of paying attention to his real live girlfriend. Combs makes West such a hissable scumbag, and I'm glad they didn't try to soften him for the sequel.
  3. The decision to make this movie a big all-star cavalcade of practical creature FX. There's a little something for everybody here, whether it's the goofy fingers-and-eyeball "doodle" that West builds in the first act, or the full-on body horror monstrosities that show up later on.
