2020 Cult Movie Challenge Week 45: Sonny Chiba Week I didn't know exactly what to expect with this one, but if anything this feels like kind of a precursor to the weird high-concept direct-to-video gangster movies that Takashi Miike was doing in the late '90s/early '00s where it's ostensibly a cookie cutter crime film but then suddenly there's some weird supernatural or otherwise extra-stylized genre element in the mix. Like those films, the direction and wild effects are really what makes this, even as the performances and storyline don't always make sense moment-to-moment. I wouldn't say it's necessarily an ideal showcase for Chiba as anything more than a stoic '70s badass, but I had a good time with it.
