2021 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 21: '80S TEEN COMEDY WEEK For this week, I went in a slightly different direction with the Teen Comedy theme by going with burgeoning '80s subgenre of old people behaving like young people (and vice versa). I'd never gotten around to this one back in the actual '80s, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn't so much of a fratty raunchfest as much as a good-natured (dare I say wholesome?) family comedy. I had expected Dangerfield's character to be a lot more of an insufferable rich jerk, but his attempts at forming a closer relationship with his son were actually semi-touching. The romance with Sally Kellerman's professor definitely presents some ethical issues, even if you can kind of hand-wave the power differential/age difference by virtue of the wacky comedy premise. But all in all I thought it was a good illustration of a slobs vs. snobs comedy where the slob actually learns something, improves themselves, and proves to be an asset to their community instead of just sticking it to the snob characters.
