1st Annual Criterion Challenge Week 31: Samurai I was of two minds about this movie. On one hand, I was kind of stymied by the decision to bring actual magic into the movie's universe (as opposed to near-supernatural fighting skills), which seems more of a piece with the more fantastic cinematic worlds of wuxia films than the quasi-historical one depicted in the previous LW&C movies. On the other hand, the final action set piece in the snow is very entertaining and feels "bigger" than the ones in the earlier chapters, which makes it even more of a shame that the series didn't directly continue after this one and give a more satisfying resolution to the Yagyu plotline.
