1st Annual Criterion Challenge Week 35: Directed by Akira Kurosawa Of the various adaptations of "Macbeth" that I've watched over the years, this may be my favorite of the bunch. It preserves pretty much everything I like about the original play, but the way it handles the more mystical/surreal aspects is right in my wheelhouse. As Kurosawa's Shakespeare-inspired films go, "Ran" tops this one for sheer spectacle, but you can't really go wrong either way.
