a review of 魔骷髅

HOOPTOBER OCHO NIGHT TWO This is one of Cinemonster's three bonus movie suggestions for Hooptober Ocho, and it did not disappoint. I've seen several of the movies that Cushing and Lee did around this time and I'll admit that for every one that I like, there's a few more that I find sorta dry, but THE SKULL held my interest all the way through. There's a ton of surreal imagery throughout, mostly centering around the titular skull doing things a disembodied skull should not be doing, or shot from the skull's POV as though a tiny Go-Pro is shoved into the nasal cavity. Lots of creepy stuff with lighting and disorienting camera moves, so I guess it's not that surprising that director Freddie Francis went on to shoot three movies for David Lynch. It's also a smorgasbord of recognizable British character actors, so keep your eyes peeled for Michael Gough, Peter Woodthorpe, and Patrick Magee in scenes that are guaranteed to make you point at the screen and go "hey, it's that guy."
