HOOPTOBER OCHO NIGHT THIRTEEN & 2021 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 40: TOBE HOOPER WEEK Like a lot of anthologies this one is a mixed bag, and the unequal balance between Carpenter and Hooper directed segments weighs this one heavily in favor of the former. The opening segment (directed by Carpenter) with the beleaguered gas-station employee has a lot of fun cameos and character bits, but ultimately doesn't pay off as satisfyingly as it might. The second one (also Carpenter) with Stacy Keach as a balding man who gets an experimental hair-restoration treatment feels like a solid throwback to Twilight Zone style morality plays as well as a conceptual sibling of Carpenter's "They Live", and it's always fun to see David Warner in a sinister supporting role. The third part (directed by Hooper) with Mark Hamill as a nice-guy baseball player who gets an eye transplant from a serial killer feels weirdly miscalculated to me. It feels like a very conscious attempt at putting Hamill into a role that is as far away from Luke Skywalker as possible, but the part also sacrifices a lot of his natural charm in the process.
