2021 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 46: AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL WEEK It might not be wholly fair of me to say that this one comes across as something of a retread of the previous year's HOUSE OF USHER (1960), but it does feel like diminishing returns in spite of another fine performance by Vincent Price and a slightly bigger cast/budget. Unlike USHER, the Poe story is more of an afterthought here, with Richard Matheson mostly just riffing on Gothic story cliches and themes. The titular torture device does not actually come into play until literally the last 10 minutes, but it is pretty well-visualized (if underused) as a set piece.
