It had been a couple of years since I saw this the first time, and I still sort of remembered the goofiness that begins in the opening sequence and runs all the way through. Jet Jaguar, Megalon, the Seatopians, Gigan, even the involvement of Godzilla in the big battle - none of it makes any sense, so the only way to enjoy it is to accept this. There is no city devastation in this film, no female roles, no environmental message (I don't count the Seatopians' complaint against the surface people), and no resolution really, just a bunch of things that happen. A couple of bad guys are killed along the way, no big deal, but no animals. I thought the highlight was the downhill chase involving two cars and one motorcycle which arose from pretty much nothing and which signified nothing. It's all fine.
