A borderline misanthropic and disaffected theater critic is summoned to an English manor house to try to get to the bottom of an alleged family miracle. There is an authorial v/o throughout which seems somewhat lacking in imagination as far as adaptation, but it's still a neat little mystery story. Not exactly a happy ending but it goes out on a high note at least
