I was listening to a podcast this week, two people talking about folk horror movies, listening to the earth, hearing its secrets. What do we hear? How do we react if we even listen to it? In a completely unrelated act, I decided to watch this rockumentary last night. It's a wordless watch for most of its runtime, and I was pretty riveted throughout. About a half-hour in, I was feeling small and helpless/hopeless. Who are we (as an entire civilization) to keep destroying and taking and building just to destroy and take and (re)build even more again and again? I feel like the earth is screaming. And when this ended, the feelings of helplessness or hopelessness weren't shaken. I'd like to create a magic circle in my own backyard. I'd like to see if the earth has secrets for me, and to try and find comfort knowing that I've done just a little bit more to be a little bit better. This movie isn't perfect, and it's not for everyone, and I don't expect anyone to get the same from it that I did, but I think it's worth watching, if for nothing more than some stunning visuals put to a great score.
