I was charmed by the acting, which is somehow both completely amateurish and also rather naturalistic (I only really take slight umbrage with the mother, but could also make the case that she's seen some shit and this is just how she is now). And then there's the underlying sense that these people have experienced traumas so great that that's what's causing everything that's happening in the first place. In a way, there's a modern folk-horror-ish-ness to it - a "psychotronic folk horror" if you will - that I was really taken with, and sort of a found message for dealing with mental health at the end; anyone trying to deal with things on their own dies, but two powers combined can face any demons. From a filmic standpoint, there are a few scenes/shots that were actually pretty impressive; I can't say I was fully expecting that before we started watching. And the score is pretty great, too! Which is good, because the mic work on display is so artistically handled that it makes the dialog nearly unhearable. I was a 3.5 when I started writing this, but I think I've talked myself up to a 4. Just some really good stuff going on here.
