I’ve watched this right after finishing the book. The book has significant advantages over the film due to the Hays Code censoring out crucial plot points. Without reading the book, those parts wouldn’t make much sense to me in the movie. The different ending isn’t necessarily censorship but rather a production decision to give Bogart and Bacall more screen time together as they were a big hit as a couple at the time. I much prefer the book’s ending.
