101 Damnations: Halloween 2020 Streaming Recommendations

102 movies

Over the last several years, I've rekindled and deepened my love of genre cinema by participating in a number of Letterboxd horror and cult movie challenges. In the process, I've polished off a ton of classics that I'd never gotten around to before, and also discovered some buried riches that I hadn't even known about before.

With that in mind, I wanted to give something back to help encourage and guide the nascent horror hounds out there who are just now discovering the richness of the genre.

This is by no means a definitive list of all the quality horror readily available on streaming, but I think it could be a nice resource and starting point for anybody looking to take a deep dive into the past 100 years of scary movies. I'll readily admit that I've only scratched the surface myself, so don't be afraid to go off the beaten path and explore what looks good to you once you've exhausted these recommendations.

You'll notice that most of the movies featured here are available on free ad-supported services such as Tubi or Crackle, as well as local library-affiliated services like Hoopla and Kanopy. These sites are a veritable treasure trove of horror, including both restorations of vintage films from labels like Full Moon, Kino, and Shout Factory as well as current indie faves from A24, Oscilloscope Labs, and others. I've also included a handful of titles that you can find on your regular household Netflixes and Hulus, but you can watch the vast majority of titles on this list without spending a dime.

Having said that, I do encourage anybody who wants to get serious about horror to look into a subscription to the all-horror/thriller streaming service Shudder. It's only around $6 a month (less if you're like me and went for the annual subscription rate) and the curation and exclusives are top-notch. They offer a free trial period and have some special deals around this time of the year, so it's well worth taking the plunge if you're curious.

The list is mostly in chronological order, although I've also added a little section at the end of left-field "cult classic" picks from all eras. Follow the numbers:

  1. 1-22: Classic Scares (pre-1980)
  2. 23-46: Gen-X Nostalgia (80s/90s)
  3. 47-72: Modern Frights (2000-present)
  4. 73-101: Cult Classics (too weird to be a classic, too classic to be forgotten)

Acknowledgments: -- Benito Cereno and his annual Haunting of Netflix House lists, which were a big inspiration for me starting my yearly October horrorthons ca. 2014 or so. -- Cinemonster and his annual Hooptober challenge right here on Letterboxd, for turning exploration of the horror genre into a delightful non-competitive game for cinephiles. -- Justin Hullinger and his weekly Cult Movie Challenge on Facebook, for insights into niche subgenres that I hadn't delved into previously. -- The great folks on The Flop House Podcast Facebook group, who over the years have helped to give me a better and more informed critical perspective on cult movies and genre cinema. -- And to anyone I might have forgotten, thank you for everything.

Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979) [Movie] Douban IMDb TMDB WikiData Skybridge
Zombi 2
other title: 生人回避 / Zombi 2
On the Caribbean island of Matul, white doctor David Menard is trying to stem the tide of cannibal zombies that are returning from the dead. Arriving on the island are Anne and reporter Peter West who are looking for Anne's missing father. The pair soon find themselves under attack from the zombies.
AtomicPwrdRobot: AKA "Zombie". Lucio Fulci directs a delightfully trashy Italo-zombie pic that not only includes the often-cited scene of an underwater zombie fighting an apparently live shark (and winning), but also a few pulpy action setpieces that feel like a fairly direct inspiration for the undead-fighting gameplay of the Resident Evil videogame series.

Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht
A real estate agent leaves behind his beautiful wife to go to Transylvania to visit the mysterious Count Dracula and formalize the purchase of a property in Wismar.
AtomicPwrdRobot: German director Werner Herzog's radically-reimagined remake of Murnau's "Nosferatu", starring his regular muse/archnemesis Klaus Kinski as Dracula. Among this version's innovations is the elevation of original novel's damsel (here played by a fantastic Isabelle Adjani) into the proactive heroine of the story.

(If you watch this and are looking for more Adjani, I strongly suggest you seek out the 1981 Andrej Zulawski thriller "Possession." It's not available to stream in the US, and is only otherwise available on a pricey/out-of-print Blu-ray, but it's worth putting in your watchlist for whenever it might resurface.)

Inferno
A young man returns from Rome to his sister's satanic New York apartment house.
AtomicPwrdRobot: Argento's directorial follow-up to Suspiria, and for my money a much wilder ride all around. Once again, the plot is mostly a grab bag of Giallo tropes, but the visuals and the Keith Emerson score make it a pretty fun watch.

1981 horror film directed by David Cronenberg
AtomicPwrdRobot: David Cronenberg tries his hand at sci-fi/horror with splattery results. At times it feels like a surreal forerunner of the modern superhero film formula. This is also the movie where that exploding-head reaction GIF you've probably seen 100 times comes from.

Basket Case
5.4 (7 ratings) director: Frank Henenlotter actor: Kevin Van Hentenryck / Terri Susan Smith
A young man carrying a big basket that contains his extremely deformed, formerly conjoined twin brother seeks vengeance on the doctors who separated them against their will.
AtomicPwrdRobot: A deeply goofy bit of low-budget body horror from writer/director Frank Henenlotter. The realization of the movie's "monster" through an unconvincing yet hilarious combination of makeup, puppetry, and an extremely fake looking rubber head makes this a lot of fun.

New York police are bemused by reports of a giant flying lizard that has been spotted around the rooftops of New York, until the lizard starts to eat people. An out-of-work ex-con is the only person who knows the location of the monster's nest and is determined to turn the knowledge to his advantage, but will his gamble pay off or will he end up as lizard food?
AtomicPwrdRobot: This starts out as a pretty rote creature feature with David Carradine versus an ancient Aztec legend in the heart of New York City, only to be saved by a gloriously weird performance by Michael Moriarty as an down on his luck ex-con with a lead on where to find the monster's lair.

When Trish (Michelle Michaels) decides to invite her high school girls basketball teammates over for a slumber party, she has no idea the night will be ruined by an escaped mental patient with a portable drill in the cult classic The Slumber Party Massacre.
The only sane survivor of the first incident, Courtney (Crystal Bernard), dreams of the driller killer returning in the first sequel, Slumber Party Massacre II. She cannot help shake the feeling that she and her friends will be viciously tormented by the killer. Her nightmare becomes reality when the killer returns, reincarnated as an evil rocker with a deadly guitar.
After a relaxing day at the beach, a group of teens decide to have a slumber party. Their boyfriends predictably show up to scare them, but there is something much scarier lurking in the shadows as the group starts getting attacked by an unknown killer in the second, and last, installment, Slumber Party Massacre III.
AtomicPwrdRobot: Although the cover makes it look all for the world like a standard '80s slasher with scantily-clad coeds being picked off one by one by a psychopath, the screenplay by bestselling mystery writer Rita Mae Brown has a subversive pro-feminist message underneath all the power tool-based violence.

A young girl, with an amazing ability to communicate with insects, is transferred to an exclusive Swiss boarding school, where her unusual capability might help solve a string of murders.
AtomicPwrdRobot: Maybe my favorite Argento, thanks to its consistently gonzo tone and a young Jennifer Connelly giving a fearless performance where she falls off of buildings, rolls down darkened hillsides, and trudges through literal bubbling pits of gore as the film's teenage heroine.

The Stuff (1985) [Movie] Douban Eggplant.place IMDb TMDB WikiData
The Stuff
Amalgamated Dairies hires David Rutherford, an FBI man turned industrial saboteur, to investigate a popular new product called “the Stuff,” a new dessert product that is blowing ice cream sales out of the water. Nobody knows how it’s made or what’s in it, but people are lining up to buy it. It's got a delicious flavor to die for!
AtomicPwrdRobot: A hilarious '80s consumerist twist on the Body Snatchers formula, in which a new frozen taste treat takes America by storm, turning suburban couch potatoes into gooey zombies. If you dug Michael Moriarty in "Q" he shows up in this movie too, giving another delightfully cracked performance as an unlikely hero with an equally unlikely Foghorn Leghorn accent.

1985 film by George A. Romero
AtomicPwrdRobot: Although Romero's earlier mall-zombie epic "Dawn of the Dead" is typically considered the most influential of his sequels to the original "Night of the Living Dead", this one has a lot to recommend it as well. The Tom Savini makeup and effects are well worth your time, as is the slow & steady build to the action-packed finale with zombies inside a military base.

A group of people are trapped in a West Berlin movie theater infested with ravenous demons who proceed to kill and possess the humans one-by-one, thereby multiplying their numbers.
AtomicPwrdRobot: An incredibly fun new wave-styled action/horror combo directed by Lamberto Bava (son of Mario), with the titular demons attacking unsuspecting moviegoers locked inside a spooky Berlin movie palace.

1985 film directed by Stuart Gordon
AtomicPwrdRobot: An unabashedly campy B-horror comedy that works both as a parody of classic mad science movies while also working as a legitimately creepy example of the genre. The makeup and gore effects are classics of the form, but the real main attraction is Jeffrey Combs's hubris-fueled intensity as the film's antihero, Dr. Herbert West.

AtomicPwrdRobot: A 10-year-old boy tries to stop an alien invasion in his hometown that has brainwashed his parents and most of the other adults. A Tobe Hooper-directed remake of the 1950s SF classic, this is also one of the more kid-friendly movies on the list.

High-tech robots equipped with state-of-the-art security devices have been recruited as the new mechanical "night watchmen" for the Park Plaza Mall. When a jolting bolt of lightning short-circuits the main computer control, the robots turn into "killbots" on the loose after unsuspecting shoppers!
AtomicPwrdRobot: This movie upgrades the mall survival-horror premise of "Dawn of the Dead" with killer robots and comes in at a breezy 77 minute running time that makes it perfect for half of a double feature with another '80s classic of your choice.

In a panic, the others try to get out, only to find they are now locked in the theater with the killer! Which one of them committed the murder, and who will get out alive?
AtomicPwrdRobot: A fun Giallo-influenced slasher with old-fashioned murder mystery overtones, and the spooky theater setting provides plenty of opportunities for imaginative kills. Depending on where you watch this one, it will either turn up under "StageFright" or "Aquarius", because sometimes the titles on these movies are just like that.

Ash Williams and his girlfriend Linda find a log cabin in the woods with a voice recording from an archeologist who had recorded himself reciting ancient chants from "The Book of the Dead." As they play the recording an evil power is unleashed taking over Linda's body.
AtomicPwrdRobot: The Sam Raimi/Bruce Campbell classic that was one of my gateways to horror genre appreciation as a teen. The original "Evil Dead" is 100% worth seeing if you're a true connoisseur, but the sequel (really more of a remake) is everything that movie was while showing how much Raimi's visual chops had developed in the intervening six years. That it's also a boundlessly inventive work of slapstick with a career-making performance by Bruce Campbell is a welcome bonus.

AtomicPwrdRobot: A cheapo evil-twin slasher that is elevated by the fun dual performance of Mark Soper as the psycho killer and his nice-guy double, as well as "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman's" Louise Lasser putting in approximately 10X the required level of acting required for her character.

1987 horror film directed by Clive Barker
AtomicPwrdRobot: The directorial debut of horror writer Clive Barker, filled with some extremely gloopy special effects and equally gloopy interpersonal relationships for its characters. It's no faint praise to say that Andrew Robinson's creepy performance (as the nice-guy dad whose skin gets hijacked by a demoniacal sex criminal) is one of the more shuddery things in a movie where we literally see people getting flayed alive roughly every 20 minutes.

When a group of teenagers inadvertently kill his only son, Ed Harley seeks the powers of a backwoods witch to bring the child back to life.
AtomicPwrdRobot: A terrific creature feature from mechanical effects maestro Stan Winston, the title character is a genuinely impressive practical creation. It helps that the story is also a well-told meditation on vengeance, with Lance Henriksen playing a rural gas station owner with a vendetta against the joyriding kids who accidentally ran over his son.

Elliot, a successful gynecologist, works at the same practice as his identical twin, Beverly. Elliot is attracted to many of his patients and has affairs with them. When he inevitably loses interest, he will give the woman over to Beverly, the meeker of the two, without the woman knowing the difference. Beverly falls hard for one of the patients, Claire, but when she inadvertently deceives him, he slips into a state of madness.
AtomicPwrdRobot: David Cronenberg tells the (heavily fictionalized) true story of twin gynecologists gone mad, both played by a marvelous Jeremy Irons. More of a psychological thriller in the tradition of Hitchcock than what some might think of as horror, it nonetheless carries a number of Cronenberg's trademark touches including some memorably grisly surgical scenes.
