迪福(《鲁宾逊飘流记》的作者)这段文字，把撒旦描写成漫游者，一如小说的两个主角。撒旦可以在空气中(in the air)掌管某种领域，而小说正是从空中(in the air)展开。再加上小说的叙事者是魔鬼，象征的说，整本小说都是在魔鬼的领域中发生。
第一章 天使吉百列 (The Angel Gibreel)
魔鬼以叙事者「我」出现的次数很少。像p10：「我是谁？还有谁在？」p16：「显然我知道真相，我看着整件事发生。尽管我无所不在也无所不能，但现在我不做评论，然而我希望可以摆平这些事。」不过，一直要到第二章，p95：「我知道，鬼话连篇，撒旦打断吉百列。我？」细心的读者才会发觉，这个「我」原来是魔鬼。但仔细分析，会觉得这个魔鬼像个有点顽皮的老迷糊，就像圣诞老公公，一点都不可怕。
飞机刚刚在高空爆炸，两个主角吉百列和萨拉丁自天而降，活活掉到英国海滩。读者可以从这两人在坠落中的言行看出他们性格是南辕北辙。吉百列一边往下掉一边唱歌跳舞，萨拉丁则一板一眼，唱的是英国爱国歌曲。在空中，吉百列惊见蕾哈的魅影(p13) ，萨拉丁则感觉到被一股躁动不安的力量攫住(p15)。
吉百列本是街头贫童，因外表非常英俊，长大后就成了孟买影城第一红星。少年孤独期间曾以阅读打发渡日 (p29) ，后来都变成他在小说中做梦的材料。一场大病，他突然失去信仰(p34) ，就在大啖猪肉以证明自己不再是回教徒时，与英国女子阿丽露雅一见钟情(p35) 。 旧爱蕾哈因此伤心得跳楼自杀(p20-21) 。他之所以搭上这班飞机，是为了去英国与新欢阿丽露雅重聚 。
萨拉丁出身孟买富商家庭，十三四岁就被父亲送去英国读书。刚去英国时吃足苦头，从此立志要做道道地地的英国人。他讨厌与父亲和印度有关的一切，大学期间父亲常来信骂他是魔鬼附身(p52)。大学毕业后他娶英国女子帕梅拉为妻，并靠模仿声音的天才，成了英国最红的配音演员。他这次回印度省亲，与父亲再起严重冲突，但也生平第一次爱上印度女子(季妮) 。 省完亲要回英国，才搭上这班飞机。
让萨拉丁走红的电视节目「异形秀」(Aliens) 在英文中其实是双关语，兼有「外星人」和「外来人口」之意，所以才会引来政治批评(p67) 。节目内容有妖魔化外来人口之嫌，可以说，多年来萨拉丁一直是英国主流迫害异文化(回教徒与有色人种)的共犯。
第二章 魔罕德 (Mahound)
吉百列开始做起先知魔罕德的梦，情节有部份貌似回教早期史，但大部份则是鲁西迪的虚构。
为什么梦中的先知叫「魔罕德」？答案在pp95-96：为了「将侮辱转化成力量」。但明眼的读者应可看出，梦中的先知及其门徒在加希利亚所受到的屈辱，有点像梦外的回教徒在伦敦的境遇。
魔罕德在山上俯瞰加希利亚城。城主阿布．辛伯去找与自己妻子有染的诗人巴力，胁迫他用诗篇羞辱魔罕德。阿布．辛伯的妻子家族拥有三女神的神庙特许权，这是阿布．辛伯在加希利亚的统治基础，所以他才对宣扬「万物非主，唯有真主」的魔罕德满怀戒心。
加希利亚城民争相传诵诗人羞辱魔罕德的诗篇。阿布．辛伯就与魔罕德谈条件，只要魔罕德认可三女神，就可以留在城中，不然就要被逐出。魔罕德说出了所谓的「撒旦诗篇」：「你们可曾想过拉特与乌扎，还有另一个排行第三的马纳特？她们是高翔的鸟儿，她们的代祷的确已蒙允许」(p117)。这段诗篇表示，新教不再是一神教，而是单一主神教 (henotheism，就是除了一个主神，还有许多副神) 。
注意：「撒旦诗篇」情节并不是作者自己的想象。魔鬼曾诱惑过先知，让他误传「撒旦诗篇」，先承认三女神，之后又否认，这是古已有之的传说。只是十一世纪之后的伊斯兰学者都认定这则传说是邪魔外道。吉百列少年时读过这传说(p29) ，所以才会梦见这情节。
魔罕德一认可三女神，城民即陷入狂欢。魔罕德在阿布．辛伯的妻子馨德的床上醒来，意识到自己所传达的是撒旦诗篇(p125) 。他到天房去，宣布废除撒旦诗篇，以天使的诗篇替代。阿布．辛伯与馨德夫妇立刻开始迫害新教徒。魔罕德只好率众逃往雅兹里布。在本章结尾，吉百列梦见三女神来找他算帐，因为吉百列心知肚明，魔鬼是他，天使也是他。
第三章 勒文伦．德温敦（Ellowen Deeowen）
八十八岁的萝莎．戴梦德，整天都在回忆九百年前的「征服者威廉」登陆英国，还有五十年前自己曾远嫁的阿根廷。她目睹吉百列和萨拉丁的从天而降，把两人捡回家。萨拉丁长出羊角羊蹄，被英国警方当做非法移民逮捕。吉百列与临终的萝莎有一场热恋。英国警方把萨拉丁凌虐了一顿，才发现是大乌龙，原来萨拉丁是道道地地的英国公民。警方把萨拉丁揍晕，送去一个全是怪物的医院。半人半兽的群怪策划一场大逃亡，萨拉丁也跟着逃出医院。他逃回自己的家，却撞见妻子帕梅拉正与他的好友姜披燕好。看见萨拉丁没死于空难，还变成一副鬼样，两人都吓个半死。
萝莎死后，吉百列搭火车去伦敦。车上有个口若悬河对他传教的美国佬马斯拉玛(Maslama, 是回教伪先知的名字) 。他对吉百列说：「我从来没有怀疑过你会降临」(p190) ，吉百列才发觉，自己已经变成天使的模样。
场景跳接到吉百列的心上人阿丽露雅(p192) ，她正对一群女学生说自己的登山经验。
吉百列一到伦敦，就碰到蕾哈的鬼魂，他想逃却逃不过。正要昏死过去，阿丽露雅把他救起。
第四章 阿伊莎（Ayesha）
吉百列做了一个与某宗教领袖有关的梦，这一段明显的影射伊朗宗教领袖何梅尼。这个梦中的阿伊莎是宗教领袖极欲推翻的邪恶女王。宗教领袖召来天使吉百列，骑乘在吉百列背上，飞回革命正风起云涌的祖国。从女王阿伊莎的尸身飞起「撒旦诗篇」中的女神拉特。吉百列与拉特一番力搏，才打败她。
本章的下半部(p228起)是吉百列的另一个梦。这个梦中的阿伊莎是满身蝴蝶的少女。蝴蝶村的大地主默札．萨依德尝试着把自己对少女阿伊莎的欲念转移到妻子米筱身上，米筱却与阿伊莎越来越亲近。阿伊莎宣称受天使吉百列启示，米筱已罹患乳癌，唯一的疗方就是徒步去麦加朝圣，也就是用双脚走过阿拉伯海。不信邪的默札．萨依德很生气，既然没办法打断妻子的念头，只好也跟着去，希望能在途中阻止这场疯狂。
第五章 一座可见但没人看见的城市(A City Visible but Unseen)
回到现实中的伦敦，姜披把魔鬼模样的萨拉丁带回自己住的香达尔公寓。(注意：这里房东太太馨德并不是第二、六章那个馨德，女儿米筱也不是第四、八章那个患病的米筱。)房东两个女儿米筱与安娜希塔都觉得萨拉丁的魔鬼模样酷毙了。
萨拉丁打电话给工作伙伴咪咪，才知道自己失业了。他的老板哈尔跟他解释为什么「异行秀」要叫停。萨拉丁也听说吉百列还活着，他自称从来没搭过遇难的飞机，正准备要把撒旦诗篇的梦拍成电影。萨拉丁还得知，妻子已怀有姜披的骨肉。同时有个连续杀人狂正横行伦敦。警方把一个叫乌胡鲁．辛巴的黑人激进领袖当做嫌犯抓起来。萨拉丁去了一个叫「热蜡」的夜总会，一场喧闹，群众烧掉英国首相撒切尔夫人的刍像p284) ， 萨拉丁突然又变回人样。
阿丽露雅和吉百列重逢后非常恩爱，只是吉百列心病很重。他被蕾哈的鬼魂搞得疯疯癫癫，决定以天使的身份去拯救伦敦，却被电影制作人希索底亚的车子撞倒。讲话口吃的希索底亚把他送回阿丽露雅那边，和他签下片约，要他在片中扮演天使吉百列。他再次想离开阿丽露雅，公开露面却造成影迷暴动。混乱中脱身，他再次倒在阿丽露雅门口。
第六章 重返加希利亚（Return to Jahilia）
这是全书争议性最强的一章，又回到先知魔罕德的情节。精神已彻底错乱的吉百列梦见，魔罕德信徒大增，凯旋回到加希利亚。可怕的馨德丝毫没老，对加希利亚进行她的恐怖统治。讽刺诗人巴力遇到魔罕德的门徒赛尔曼。赛尔曼已对魔罕德失去信仰，他说先知在雅兹里布期间变得很喜欢颁布法令，并宣称都是天使吉百列的启示。但赛尔曼怀疑，这些法令都是为了先知自己的方便。这些法令(p353-54)许多是鲁西迪本人的杜撰，所以批评者谴责这段严重丑化回教，但辩护者指出，就是因为这一段很扯，所以鲁西迪应是在讥刺各种道德戒律，而不是针对伊斯兰律法。
赛尔曼为了测试魔罕德，就一边写经一边窜改。魔罕德浑然不觉，但赛尔曼知道迟早会东窗事发，就先逃到加希利亚来。
年迈的阿布．辛伯皈依新教。馨德起初不肯皈依，但在天房的偶像都打碎之后，她也皈依了新教。赛尔曼由于门徒的讲情而免于一死。诗人巴力则跑去一间叫「帘幕」的妓院躲起来。十二名妓女为了以广招徕，就以魔罕德的十二妻妾的名字为花名，巴力与她们轮流行房，彷佛在扮演魔罕德。魔罕德扫黄，把十二名妓女通通抓起来。巴力去监牢外为她们诵诗，也被抓起来，并被判死刑。同时，馨德的皈依原来是诡计，她偷偷施法，召来「撒旦诗篇」中的女神拉特。魔罕德临终，意识到带来死亡的是拉特，说出他的最后一句话：「我还是要谢谢你，拉特，谢谢你这份礼物。」(p382)
第七章 艾兹瑞尔（The Angel Azraeel）
萨拉丁思索，他曾深爱英国与帕梅拉，但如今两者都背叛了他。他躲在香达尔公寓看电视，对房东的女儿米筱开始有了性幻想。在书中很少露面的叙事者魔鬼插了一段话进来：「我什么都没说，别要求我用某种方式把事情讲清楚....... 」(p394-95)姜披于心不安，劝帕梅拉重新接纳萨拉丁。两人带着萨拉丁去参加一场群众大会，抗议警方胡乱逮捕乌胡鲁．辛巴。萨拉丁想一个人透透气，搭上一辆出租车，听到收音机里有个布道者顿斯代(Dumsday, 与 Doomsday「世界末日」谐音 )正在攻击达尔文的演化论。萨拉丁意识到，自己的演变已经无法逆转，他已不可能回到过去。
热浪袭来伦敦(p405 -)。制片人希索迪亚办了一个派对。萨拉丁在派对中与吉百列重逢。他责怪吉百列在警察把他抓走时见死不救。萨拉丁想到自己绿云罩顶，吉百列身旁却有金发美女阿丽露雅相伴，对吉百列更加嫉恨，没想到他却在无意之间挑起吉百列对阿丽露雅的猜忌(p415) 。吉百列大发神经，以为姜披一定也和阿丽露雅有染，当场就把姜披揍昏。
阿丽露雅为了治疗吉百列的心病，带他去苏格兰乡间静养，也邀萨拉丁同行。但两人的恩爱只让萨拉丁更加妒火中烧，他于是运用自己模仿声音的天才，打怪怪的电话给阿丽露雅与吉百列两人，果然活生生拆散他们。吉百列现在疯得更彻底了，头上的天使光圈也变得更明显。
乌胡鲁．辛巴在警方的看守所内离奇死亡，而且证据显示他根本就不是警方要抓的杀人狂。少数族群走上伦敦街头抗争，疯掉的吉百列在暴动的街头游荡(p441-)，他自以为成了死亡天使艾兹瑞尔，他要吹响最后的号角，宣告世界末日的来临。他以为号角吹出了末日之火，但其实火警应是由暴动点燃。姜披与帕梅拉俩于火警中丧生，萨拉丁赶回燃烧中的香达尔公寓救人，却也险些丧命，幸好有吉百列搭救。救护车把两位主角载走，吉百列再度失去意识，梦见下一章的情节。
第八章 阿拉伯海分开（The Parting of the Arabian Sea）
本章上接第四章，影射一桩真实历史事件。1983年，真的有一群巴基斯坦人为了徒步过海朝圣，而集体灭顶。
朝圣者遇到重重险阻，但蝴蝶女阿伊莎还是坚持走下去。默札．萨依德恳求妻子米筱改搭飞机，妻子仍不为所动。一万五千多名矿工本来想找朝圣者麻烦，却被一场豪雨淹死(p473) ，大家就更相信阿伊莎具有神力。他们途经一座清真寺，寺外有一名弃婴，伊玛目(地位类似天主教中的主教)宣布为魔鬼的孩子，阿伊莎就号召群众以乱石打死婴儿。到了阿拉伯海滨，默札．萨依德眼睁睁看着妻子和大家一起走入海中淹死。其它目击者则坚称，海水真的为朝圣者分开。默札．萨依德返乡断食而死，临终之际，他迷乱的意识到他正与朝圣者一起走入海中，就在灭顶那一刻，海水真的分开了。
第九章 神灯（A Wonderful Lamp）

C'est un couple sans histoire. Tous deux approchent de la quarantaine et leur seul regret est de ne pas avoir réussi, en quinze ans de mariage, à avoir d'enfant. A la suite d'un repas d'anciens camarades de classe, l'impeccable façade conjugale se fissure : le soir même la jeune femme demande à son mari de relater, année par année, ce qu'il a fait dans sa vie. Elle lui révèle à son tour certains épisodes de son passé, parfaitement consciente de l'effet dévastateur que ses aveux auront sur lui. Soir après soir, ils affrontent - et creusent - le gouffre qui les sépare, dans un huis clos cruel et bientôt meurtrier...

Un vieux contentieux oppose la famille déchue des Wang à celle des Ding, dont la prospérité a coïncidé avec son déclin. Une rancœur amoureuse vient y mettre le comble lorsque Wang Liegou voit la belle qu'il convoite convoler avec Ding Zongwang, tandis que lui échoit une épouse au visage grêlé. Dès lors, il n'aura de cesse de faire disparaître son rival : devenu le moteur de son existence, ce désir de meurtre, sans cesse déçu et sans cesse ravivé, le propulse à travers les temps troublés de la guerre sino-japonaise et des luttes entre nationalistes et communistes, jusqu'à l'avènement de la république populaire et à la réforme agraire du début des années 1950.<br />Autour de cette vengeance impossible, Chi Li construit un récit tonique et rythmé, jalonné de surprises et teinté d'humour. Mais ce roman où la grande Histoire se trouve récrite dans le langage des passions individuelles délivre aussi un message ironique, qui signe à lui seul le changement d'époque : car c'est au propriétaire foncier, cultivé et magnanime qu'est donné ici le beau rôle, tandis que le paysan pauvre assume celui de l'envieux et du méchant.

Le rabbin revient sur un élément ancien, fondateur du principe de départ de la série mythique de Joann Sfar. Le jour de l'enterrement de sa femme, il décide de garder un chat. Le chat. Pour Zlabya. Pour ne pas « être deux ». Des années plus tard, le chat se mit à parler. Un événement hors du commun qui questionna le rabbin sur sa foi, ses croyances, autant qu'il joua un rôle dans le désir de liberté et d'indépendance de la jeune Zlabya. Nous suivons Zlabya dans une aventure située entre le tome 1 et 2.

Ils s'aiment. Lui est juif, elle est catholique. Ils vivent à Alger, et un jour, le Rabbin voit arriver cette jeune femme qui, pour mieux s'intégrer et faire plaisir à son futur époux, veut se convertir au judaïsme. La stupeur le dispute à l'incompréhension : pourquoi vouloir embrasser une foi si compliquée, si irrationnelle, si pénible ? Le Chat et Zlabya sont tous d'accord pour la dissuader, et vont trouver en Knidelette une alliée inattendue...

Ce nouvel épisode nous ramène à Alger. Le rabbin Sfar et son cousin l'imam Sfar devisent sur leurs différences qu'ils pensent inconciliables. Pourtant, lorsque la mosquée est inondée, le rabbin et l'imam s'entendent pour que les musulmans puissent, le temps des travaux, prier à la synagogue. Pendant ce temps, le chat du rabbin traverse des moments difficiles : non seulement Zlabya a mis au monde un adorable bébé, ce qui le plonge dans une profonde jalousie, mais, pour ne rien arranger, des chatons se sont réfugiés dans la synagogue... Comment de petits chats étrangers peuvent-ils avoir l'audace de boire son lait ?

Le grand retour du Chat du rabbin ! Le Chat est désespéré : sa maîtresse, Zlabya, est enceinte… Que va-t-il se passer ? S'intéressera-t-elle encore à lui ? Pourra-t-il encore être caressé, pourra-t-il la voir quand il le voudra ? Quelle sera sa place ? Ne devrait-il pas partir et chercher une autre maison ? Joann Sfar retrouve avec un bonheur évident l'univers du Chat du rabbin et livre une éblouissante histoire pleine de tendresse et d'amour.
