Nous avions quitté le chat perplexe, à Paris, sous la pluie. Le voici de retour en Algérie, aux alentours d'Oran plus précisément. Là, il va passer quelques jours avec le Malka des lions, véritable légende vivante, mais légende qui vieillit et s'interroge sur le sens de la vie. <br /><br />Savoureuse aventure philosophique, brillante digression théologique, ce quatrième tome du <i>Chat du Rabbin</i> est une pure merveille qui confirme le statut particulier de l'une des oeuvres majeures de la Bande Dessinée contemporaine. Deux ans se sont écoulés depuis la sortie de <i>L'Exode</i>, le précèdent tome du <i>Chat du Rabbin</i>, deux ans pendant lesquels la série est devenue, avec plus de 300 000 exemplaires vendus, le plus grand succès de la nouvelle Bande Dessinée et un véritable phénomène de société, qui a même débouché sur une pièce de théâtre. <br /><br />Ce quatrième tome voit le retour du Chat en Algérie, aux alentours d'Oran, ce qui permet à Joann Sfar de dessiner d'un trait sensuel le Maghreb, le désert et les villes du Sud, balade qui le rapproche parfois de Pratt. Mais l'auteur profite surtout de son Chat pour tranquillement philosopher et reprend avec son lecteur cette conversation informelle autour de Dieu et des hommes, un dialogue délectable, et toujours jouissif dont on ressort un peu meilleur, en se posant plus de questions qu'avant d'en commencer la lecture. <br /><br />Que peut-on demander de plus à un livre ?

Le chat n'a pas pu empêcher la catastrophe : Zlabya, sa maîtresse adorée, a épousé le jeune homme. Et le jeune homme a emmené Zlabya chez lui et il lui a offert une salle de bains. " Zlabya ! Chez nous, il y avait un piano ! " Voilà le chat épouvantablement triste, d'autant plus qu'il ne peut plus parler et que tout le monde s'en fout. <br /><br />Et puis, la famille du jeune homme vivant à Paris et n'étant pas venue au mariage, Zlabya et son mari partent en voyage de noces à Paris. Avec le rabbin, sa malle pleine de livres et son chat. Lequel chat, dans sa grande sagesse, sent bien que ça n'emballe pas les jeunes mariés, tout ce tintouin. Bref, après un voyage emmitouflé comme s'il allait affronter les rigueurs du pôle Nord, le rabbin débarque à Paris et découvre la ville, la pluie, la Seine — " Les pauvres, même pas ils ont la mer " — et la transgression, en se tapant une orgie pas cachère du tout un soir de Shabbat. <br /><br />Pendant ce temps, le chat trouve enfin quelqu'un à qui parler : un chien à peu près aussi joli que lui. Revoilà la smala merveilleuse, avec son rabbin infiniment émouvant et casse-bonbons, et son chat unique dans les annales de la bande dessinée. <br /><br />Profondeur et légèreté, ironie et tendresse, sensualité du dessin — Sfar sous la pluie, avec ses personnages en détresse, reste à la hauteur de sa réputation de fabuleux conteur.

Alger, une communauté juive du début du XXe siècle. Au centre de l'action, le chat du rabbin. La vérité, c'est qu'il a pour ami un vieux lion poussif avec lequel il a monté un numéro : le lion effraie le monde, le Malka arrive et arrange tout. Ce qui lui attire gloire et récompenses variées.<br /><br />En attendant, le rabbin a un problème : le consistoire israélite de France exige de lui qu'il fasse une dictée. En effet, s'il veut être agréé rabbin officiel au lieu de "juste rabbin comme ça", il doit écrire en français — pour faire la prière en hébreu à des Juifs qui parlent arabe, note le chat dans sa grande sagesse. <br /><br />Après <i>La Bar-Mitsva</i>, premier épisode encensé par la critique, Sfar nous donne encore une fois un chef-d'oeuvre d'intelligence, d'humour et de tendresse — trois vertus qui s'expriment autant dans les dialogues, captivants et savoureux, que dans le dessin, merveilleux de finesse et de drôlerie.

Sfar, qui est né lui-même dans une famille juive, met en scène une communauté juive du début du XXe siècle, à Alger. Dans un décor luxuriant de tissus, carrelages et tapis orientaux, il plante un héros qui semble sorti d'une poubelle : un chat écorché, anguleux, l'air d'avoir avalé un sac de clous — hilarant. Têtu comme une bourrique et pas toujours avenant (bien que capable de tendresses renversantes), il a aussi avalé ce qui se fait de mieux en matière de raisonnement vicelard, thèse, antithèse, etc. Le résultat est une sorte de conte initiatique d'une grande beauté, où l'on apprend bien des choses sur l'usage de la parole, de la vérité et du mensonge. Une merveille de subtilité, d'émotion et d'ironie. Le rabbin et le chat du rabbin reviendront prochainement dans <i>Le Malka des Lions</i>.
