Chuji Kunisada returns to his home village to find that Jubei Matsui, the corrupt magistrate, has been responsible for virtually destroying Kunisada's family. A final tragedy leads Kunisada to join with a band of rogues living in the forest in robbing from the rich and giving to the poor, always with an eye toward avenging himself on Magistrate Matsui.

昭和20年（公元1945年）8月14日，英国、美国与中华民国所发起的《波茨坦宣言》要求日本无条件投降，日本政府召开御前会议，昭和天皇向铃木贯太郎内阁众大臣宣告日本要无条件投降的事实；使得许多日本陆军年轻军官不满，想尽办法夺走天皇录好的宣告无条件投降的唱片（玉音放送）。当天下午12时，陆军部分军官发起宫城事件、以及海军航空队小园安名大佐在厚木基地的叛乱事件，造成一系列骚动。

Rick, a down-and-out American boxer, is hired to transport a sword to Japan, unaware that the whole thing is a set up in a bitter blood-feud between two brothers, one who follows the traditional path of the samurai and the other a businessman. At the behest of the businessman, Rick undertakes samurai training from the other brother, but joins his cause. He also becomes romantically involved with the samurai's daughter.

Lonely youth Shinji meets Hatsue, a pretty pearl diver, on the beach and the two fall in love. But Shinji has a rival for Hatsue's affections, Yasuo. Yasuo spreads unpleasant gossip about his rival, and Hatsue's father forbids her to see Shinji. But when the boy saves the passengers on a boat owned by Hatsue's father, his luck in love begins to change.

In the Edo period, a nameless ronin accepts an assignment to go to a mountain pass and wait. Near the pass he stops at an inn where a collection of characters gather, including a gang set on stealing shogunate gold that's soon to come over the pass. When the Ronin's assignment becomes clear, to help the gang, he's ordered to kill the inn's residents, including a woman he's rescued from an abusive husband. He's reluctant to murder innocent people; then he learns that the gold shipment is a trap and he's part of a double cross. How he sorts through these divided loyalties tests of his samurai honor, and perhaps of his love for a woman.

人間とメカニズムが大自然と極限状況で接する苛酷なレース。世界三大ラリーの一つモンテカルロ・ラリーに参加した五代は、視界ゼロの濃霧の中で岩石に激突。昏睡状態から覚めた五代の目に像を結んだのは必死の看護を続ける恋人優子の姿だった。その時、メカニックを担当したケニアの青年マウラは、事故の責任を感じ姿を消していた。やがて春、五代の傷は癒えたが、落着いた生活を夢みていた優子の期待は見事に裏切られた。五代にとって、自動車レースこそが最大の生甲斐だった。富士スピードウェイの日本グランプリ・レースで、五代は親友ピエールの巧妙なレース妨害で優勝を逸した。五代が、日産常務高瀬から、大任を依頼されたのはそんな折だった。アフリカのサファリ・ラリー出楊がそれだった。五代は早速コースにもっとも精通したメカニック担当者マウラを探し出すことから始めた。折も折、優子かデザインの勉強のためパリに飛たった。だが、五代は彼女を追う訳にはゆかなかった。それから数日後、ナイロビ空港に降り立った五代をマウラが待受けていた。このレースには、日本グランプリで苦渋を味あわせたピエールも出場。四月三日、熱気によどんだナイロビシティホール前、大統領夫人のかざすスタート・フラッグがうち下され、カーナンバー1のプジョーが、スタートした。やがてカーナンバー90の五代チームも夜のとばりをついて多難なレースにスタートしていった。レースは苛酷そのもの、前半を完走したのは九八台中わずか一六台だった。そして後半の北廻りコースを、いや大自然を征服した五代チームのブルーバードが、大観衆の見守る中で優勝の栄に輝いた。群衆の中には優子の姿もあった。...

日本最大のヤクザ組織谷口組の三代目、田所正雄が狙撃された。田所の家族と谷口組の受けたショックは大きく、ボディガードの処分をめぐって、若頭の河上剛二と若頭補佐の権野強志の間に食い違いが生まれる。田所はかかりつけの医師、大友の手術で一命を取りとめ、最悪の事態を考えていた妻、ひろ子、長男、孝とその妻、冬子、長女、悠子、次男、範夫らの家族は一安心。そんな折、悠子の恋人で東日タイムスの記者、山田が社会部に転属になり、この事件の取材で二人の間に暗い影が漂い始める。大阪府警は田所狙撃犯を酒田組下部組織、浪華殉国団の近江と公表する。谷口組の報復が開始され、酒田系の事務所が襲撃され、組員も射殺される。その頃、田所は病院から退院、久しぶりの一家だんらんを迎えた。しかしその夜、冬子が孝の友人を信じて不注意に契約書に判を押したのがもとで孝は私文書偽造で逮捕される。その頃、近江の死体が六甲の谷底から発見される。犯人は意外にも酒田組系の者で、近江を隠しきれなくなっての犯行だ。時同じくして、冬子が例の事件を苦に自殺してしまう。谷口組という名前に冬子は押し潰されてしまったのだ。これを機に、田所は後継者を考え始める。そして、河上と権野の争いが表面化し、権野は先走った行動から破門されてしまう。田所家にも荒波が押し寄せていた。孝の会社が脱税容疑で捜査を受け、また、ボランティア活動をしていた悠子は、難民救済事業に従事すべくタイに向う決意をする。谷口組解体キャンペーンのペンを取っていた山田も彼女に追っていくことを決心、退職届を出すと、田所に悠子との結婚の許可を求めた。悠子を幸せにするという山田の決意に、田所は二人の結婚を許し、さらに、落語家になりたいという次男、範夫の希望もあっさりと許した。河上に二年六ヵ月の実刑判決がおり、権野は引退する。突然、田所が持病の心臓病で他界してしまった。谷口組組葬の日、全国から参集した黒背広姿の男の中に、たった一人の女性、ひろ子がいた。マスコミの関心は誰が四代目を継ぐかだった。そして、ひろ子が河上の四代目を発表するが、その河上も獄中で腎炎がもとで死んでしまった。「今、私がしっかりしなくては」と遺体を引き取りに行ったひろ子の顔には今までにない威厳が浮かんでいた。

梶野恳三的《鲱鱼渔场》获得了大众杂志座谈会奖，由谷口千吉执导的悬疑剧作了脚色。黑泽明共同执笔剧本。1964年由深作欣二导演、高仓健主演翻拍。纪录片式的外景摄影得到了好评。
网元的九兵卫为了捕鲱鱼，用低廉的工资搜集了渔夫。其中有曾经在桦太一起的杂鱼万。被九兵卫遗弃的万当初面临死亡，对九兵卫怀有深深的仇恨。杂鱼万也不工作，只知道睡觉，但感到自负的九兵卫什么也说不出来。被认为是死在那里的九兵卫的儿子的铁回来。杂鱼万和铁互相反目，终于到了捕鲱鱼的时候了。
