一位年青人带着诚实的信念来到孟买发展。不过，他发现自己所相信的诚实、认真，在这个大城市里是毫无价值，每个人都希望可以走歪路来致富。年青人认识了一位贫苦的老师薇亚，他们相恋，一起分享彼此梦想。但是当他玩牌诈赌的天份被人发掘之后，他决定换下小丑的面具，成了一个精于算计的市僧商人，挤身上流社会替大财主干些没良心的诈骗生意。但昔日街头的伙伴和他心爱的女老师最后让他良心发现，揭发了大财主的不法行为。

Raju faces many hurdles and disappointments in matters of the heart throughout his life. But as a clown in a circus, he tries to make his audience laugh at the cost of his own sorrows. Along the way, Raju loves and loses, but must always keep a smile on his face because, in the words of his circus manager, "The show must go on."

女孩Radha与男孩Sunder和Gopal两小无猜地长大，成年后，Sunder参加了空军部队，Gopal到英国去攻读法律，学成归国后成为了一名律师，两个长大的男孩都爱上了Radha。而Radha只爱Gopal，当Gopal得知Sunder也喜欢Radha后，他为了成全好友，以沉默回答了Radha。Sunder随部队去作战，不久，传来他牺牲的消息。这时，Gopal才没有负疚感地与Radha相爱并准备结婚，但就在这时，Sunder回来了，Gopal再一次退让了。Radha与Sunder结婚了，婚后，Sunder发现了一封写给Radha的信，失去理智的Sunder逼问这封信是谁写的，Radha决定收拾东西出走，Gopal来了，他告诉了Sunder实情，两个昔日的好友，面对友情和爱情都陷入了深深的痛苦中，最后，为了能让Sunder和Radha幸福地生活下去，Gopal开枪自杀了……
