Since most (if not all) of the master tapes from legit Impulse! recording sessions have been released, the label continued on with a "digging in the crates" approach to expanding their John Coltrane catalog. Subsequently, they came across this recording that 'Trane arranged to record without the assistance (or interference) of Impulse!. Olatunji Concert: The Last Live Recording documents a live performance on April 23, 1967, one of the last times Coltrane would appear on stage, as he passed three months later. Strictly as a document, this is a rich and telling recording. It demonstrates his sonic blast free jazz direction that was becoming more aggressive and out of bounds; It portrays what could have been one of the most dynamically stellar groups of the mid-1960s avant jazz scene with Pharoah Sanders (who, in some ways, steals the show), Alice Coltrane, Rashied Ali, and Jimmy Garrison totally ripping it up; it also gives the average collector a taste of what the maniacal collector goes out of their way to find, as the sound quality is on the level of a sub-par bootleg. Don't expect to hear Bob Theil's warm production or one of Rudy Van Gelder's pristine live recordings ?la Live at the Village Vanguard. Instead the equalization is uneven, and there are some parts where the tape drops out. Besides that though, this is essential for seasoned Coltrane listeners . ~ Sam Samuelson

A Man Called Trane [
John Coltrane
Starbucks/Rhino Custom Products
Released in 2008 as a strong jazz entry in the affordable
Starbucks/Rhino Special Products Opus Collection series, "A Man
Called Trane" is a worthwhile and accessible introduction to the
powerfully moving music of saxophonist John Coltrane. Drawing upon
the Blue Note, Atlantic, and Impulse catalogs, this ten-track
sampler spans a timeline from September 1957 to December 1964,
revisiting his live performances at the Village Vanguard and the
Newport Jazz Festival, dipping into the albums Blue Train,
Coltrane's Sound, Giant Steps, Coltrane Plays the Blues, and My
Favorite Things, and reaching a logical conclusion with the
profoundly beautiful opening movement of his extended prayer and
magnum opus "A Love Supreme." While literally dozens of equally
fine Coltrane collections exist, "A Man Called Trane" is a welcome
addition to the discography. Hopefully the producers accomplished
their goal which was clearly to expose as many people as possible
to the majesty of Trane's spiritually informed and often
restlessly ambitious artistry. This has been achieved for decades,
however, by A Love Supreme in its entirety, as an album unto
itself, the way it was originally conceived and presented to the
world, which is still perhaps the ideal choice for introducing
people to Coltrane's music. Indeed the truncation of his soul-
baring masterpiece "A Love Supreme" is the only conceivable
drawback to this otherwise excellent collection. We get the
"Acknowledgement" but no "Resolution," no "Pursuance," and no
"Psalm." ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide

Live In Japan [
Impulse!
Live in Japan is a four-disc box set by American saxophonist John Coltrane and his last group, featuring the quintet of Coltrane, his wife/pianist Alice, saxophonist/bass clarinetist Pharoah Sanders, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Rashied Ali. The 4-CD set compiles all the music issued as three albums in the seventies by Impulse!; Concert In Japan (1973, US 2-LP, electronically processed for compatible quadrophonic/stereo), Coltrane In Japan (1974, Japan 3-LP (side six is blank), mono) and Second Night In Tokyo (1976, Japan 3-LP (side six contains an interview, mono). (Some of this material was also reissued as two 2-LP sets in 1980 by MCA under the titles Coltrane In Tokyo Vol. 1 and Coltrane In Tokyo Vol. 2) The first CD issues were by Impulse! Japan as two 2-CD sets: Live In Japan Vol. 1 (same as "Coltrane In Japan") and Live In Japan Vol. 2 (same as "Second Night In Tokyo"). The US 4-CD edition includes both of these volumes, with identical mastering from the original mono tapes. The side six interview from "Second Night In Tokyo" has never been reissued on any CD edition.
Recorded live on Coltrane's only Japanese tour in July 1966 at two Tokyo venues, Shinjuku Kosei Nenkin Hall and Sankei Hall, it is taken from mono radio broadcasts. It is notable for the presence of alto saxophone by both Coltrane and Sanders; neither man often recorded with the instrument.
By this point in his career, Coltrane was firmly enmeshed into the avant-garde style of jazz. Sanders, who was an innovator of free jazz, influenced Coltrane's playing through his technical use of overblowing and fierce vibrations of the reed, and this record is remarkable for its use of multiphonics, overtones, and other extended musical techniques from both players.

Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall [
Blue Note Records

Impulse!
The album was recorded at Van Gelder Studio with the Classic Quartet in between the Crescent and A Love Supreme sessions for the film Le chat dans le sac.Director Gilles Groulx was friends with Jimmy Garrison and he used that relationship to request songs for Coltrane's quartet to record.Groulx flew to the United States to attend the recording sessions for Coltrane's only soundtrack work and Coltrane recorded it without informing his record label. After three hours in the studio, Groulx took the master tapes with him to Canada. When the director ended up shelving most of the music, it went unreleased until 2019, when Coltrane's long-time label Impulse! Records decided to release it, with the original composition "Blue World" being released on August 16, 2019 along with the announcement of the album.
The recordings were stored away until the early 21st century, when an archivist from the National Film Board of Canada was tasked with assembling Groulx's work; the government agency negotiated with Impulse! to have the album released. This album comes a year after the successful release of Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album, also from Impulse!, capturing a Classic Quartet session from 1963 and is part of a trend of unreleased albums from 1950s and 1960s jazz greats released in the 2010s.
