Où en êtes-vous ? est une collection initiée par le Centre Pompidou qui passe commande à chaque cinéaste invité d’un film de forme libre, avec lequel il répond à cette question à la fois rétrospective, introspective, et tournée vers l’avenir, ses désirs et ses projets.

Whilst the first half of Kawase Naomi’s extraordinary feat of filmmaking explored the intimate lives of the athletes participating in 2020’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, Official Film of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Side B turns its scrutiny to the event organisers, workers, politicians and protestors. This sustained attention to the face of the Olympics that is traditionally and pointedly hidden is quietly rebellious – a thrilling peek behind the curtain.
Kawase’s documentarian gaze is piercing, yet she resists polemic, allowing the political nuances and ideological stakes to reveal themselves gradually and deliberately. Look for the streaks of dark humour throughout, as the accumulation of crises takes on an almost farcical quality. Even in the constraints of this official production, there’s a profound subversion of the history of representation of the Olympics – a captivating move away from the narrative of linear, solitary triumph towards disrupted, often chaotic, collaboration.
The film is anchored by its momentum. Yet, as it heads towards its climax of the opening ceremony (a spectacle incorporating traditions of Japanese visual art that is worth seeing in itself), a Kabuki actor performing in the ceremony reflects on the insignificance of the event in the long term.
Kawase has staged an incredible cinematic coup: creating an official document of a momentous event that doubles as a reflection on its transient significance and the fleeting nature of time itself.

「杣人物語」の撮影は、河瀨にとって初の劇場用映画「萌の朱雀」が完成した直後に同じロケ地で開始された。厳しい自然や過疎に伴う様々な背景と共に、そこに生きる人間の感情を見事に描き出した「萌の朱雀」。けれどその一方で、河瀬はそこにあるフィクションでは描ききれない何かを感じていた。"私はこの地に実際に暮らす人間達のドキュメンタリーを更に撮らなければならない...いや撮りたい"この強く突き動かされる欲望により生まれた「杣人物語」は、この地で生まれ育った人間達の本音が、飾ることなく、気負うことなく素直に表現されるものになった。河瀬のカメラの前にあって、彼等は時に少年であり、少女であり、父であり母であり、恋人であり...。

Emotionally withdrawn strip club dancer Ayako has never recovered from her mother's suicide when she was young. She begins a relationship with patient potter Daiji, but leaves him behind when she quits her job and returns to her home town after a 10 year absence.

Documentary film. Starring Ono Machiko (then high school girl in Nishi Yoshino village scouted by Kawase herself for Suzaku) and Mifune Mika (daughter of Mifune Toshiro), Kawase filmed the shooting location for the photograph collection of these two actresses photographed by Arimoto Shinya, the Taiyo Award-winning young photographer and also Kawase's friend.
The conflicted feelings, between the country girl and urban girl and between the film-director and photographer, mirror the significance of life.

映画監督の河瀬直美さんが総監督を務めた東京オリンピック（五輪）の公式記録映画「東京2020オリンピック（仮）」が来年6月に公開される。配給の東宝が15日、発表した。
製作は国際オリンピック委員会、企画は大会組織委員会、制作は木下グループ。東宝は「2年にわたりカメラを回し続けた壮大な記録から、人類の未来が見えてくる」としている。
河瀬監督は1997年、「萌の朱雀」でカンヌ国際映画祭のカメラドール（新人監督賞）を史上最年少で受賞し、2007年には同映画祭で「殯（もがり）の森」がグランプリに。18年10月に五輪公式記録映画を担当することが決まった。

This sounds like the kind of half-brilliant, half-mad kind of film making that rarely happens anymore. It's called 60 Seconds of Solitude in Year Zero, and it's an omnibus production organized by the city of Talinn, Estonia, featuring the directing talents from around the world. Screening this August in Talinn, the film will be comprised of 60 one-minute silent shorts which will be projected outdoors on a large screen for one showing only.
Because afterwards, the festival organizers will burn the screen and the single existing 35 MM print of the movie.
The current slate of directors includes Mark Boswell, Albert Serra, Mika Taanila, Malcolm Le Grice, Kari Yli-Annala, Ilppo Pohjola, Naomi Kawase, Sogo Ishii, Shinji Aoyama, Joshua and Ben Sadfadie, and Philippe Grandrieux, with more names on the way. 60 Seconds of Solitude in Year Zero is still accepting submissions from filmmakers on their site.
