Habibi Funk is dedicated to re-releasing a style of music that historically never existed as a musical genre. We use the term to describe a certain sound that we like from the countries of the Arab world. The songs we chose were created in places quite far from another and under very different circumstances. Some were written and recorded during war times, others in exile. Despite the differences we think there is a musical connection between them. Essentially, we are interested in the musical endeavors, in which artists from the Arab world mixed local and regional influences with musical interests that came from outside of the region. Even though the name suggests it’s all about funk music, our focus is more than just that. Often these influences might be inspired from Western popular music such as soul, pop and rock but it’s not limited to that either. Some of our favorite records are best described as Arabic zouk (a genre originating from the Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe) like Mallek Mohamed’s music, Algerian coladera (a popular musical style from the Cape Verdean islands) or Lebanese AOR, which means the process of musical influences displayed on this compilation was much more versatile than just taking Western music as a blueprint and translating it with a local accent. The compilation features 15 different artists. Some you might already know thru Habibi Funk’s releases like Fadoul, Ahmed Malek, Dalton or Al Massrieen, while others are meant as an introduction to artists like Kamal Keila, Sharhabeel Ahmed, Attarazat Addahabia & Mallek Mohamed who will all release full length albums on Habibi Funk in 2018.
In todays world there are still many stereotypical conceptions to be found when it comes to the Arab world. Contrary to what a lot of Western narratives and media suggest, the Arab world we got to know through extensive traveling in several countries of North Africa and the Middle East, is a very versatile terrain. A place full of different stories, ideas and beliefs. And we hope that the music we release helps as a tiny, tiny piece of a larger puzzle to establish a diverse, more nuanced yet adequate idea of how musically vibrant this very diverse region once has been and also still is. At the same time we do not want anyone to misunderstand this compilation as a selection of songs to represent Arabic musical history of the 1970s and 1980s. This compilation is nothing more than a very personal curation of songs we like and in no way reflects on what has been popular in a general sense.
All tracks on this compilation are directly licensed from the artist or, in the case of artists who are sadly no longer alive, from the artist’s family. There are three exceptions: Hamid Al Shaeri’s track was licensed from SLAM! and the tracks from Belbao and Attarazat Addahabia were both licensed from Boussiphone. As a European label dealing with non- western artists we try to be aware of the responsibilities that derive within the making, seen from a post-colonial point of view by demanding ourselves not to reproduce exploitative economic patterns. We split all of the profits from our releases equally with the artists without deducting any costs that are not directly related to the release .Our agreements are license deals with limited terms after which the rights fall back to the artist or the artist’s families. We think it is important in today's reissue market, where too many shady business transactions happen, to be transparent about our licensing policies.

Some of electronic music's key developments during the 2010s came from outside its established hubs. Often, these were the result of traditional genres and instruments being electronically re-spun using digital software. (Uganda's electro acholi and Tanzanian singeli are two good examples.) In 2010, London's Honest Jon's unleashed a collection of Shangaan electro, a fast-paced style of electronic music from South Africa, that set the tempo for a decade of increasingly globalised club music.
Honest Jon's co-owner Mark Ainley was tipped off by the documentary filmmaker Wills Glasspiegel, who knew the key Shangaan producer, Richard Mthetwa (AKA Nozinja). Together with Basic Channel's Mark Ernestus, Ainley put together a compilation of Nozinja's productions. Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music From South Africa sounded unlike anything else to hit record shelves in 2010. There was frenzied interest whenever the white labels were played at Ernestus' Hard Wax shop in Berlin, while Ainley stuck the record straight in the racks at Honest Jon's, with no introduction, publicity or marketing. "No one had a clue about it, including the people working there," he said. "You had to put the record on to find out."
The compilation was followed by an extensive series of 12-inches, gathered together after two years as the album Shangaan Shake, an intercontinental remix package featuring the footwork duo DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn, UK innovators Actress and Peverelist, US heads Theo Parrish and Anthony "Shake" Shakir, and creative outliers like Ricardo Villalobos and Oni Ayhun, bringing Nozinja's music into even more homes and clubs.

For many Creation is the label that defined the shoegazing sound. From the Mary Chain through to Ride and Slowdive via My Bloody Valentine and The House of Love, Creation released the records that are always top of any shoegazing lists. There can’t be any article or list on the genre that doesn’t mention Souvlaki, Nowhere and Loveless.
It’s a musical genre that was worshipped by the UK music press for a short period in 1991 only to be followed by an onslaught of derision when bands like Nirvana and Suede started having big chart hits. I’ve lost count of the number of journalists that claim to have invented the name as a form of ridicule, but later went on to champion awful tuneless Britpop bands like Sleeper.
The Shoegaze sound may have returned underground in 1992 to make way for Grunge and Britpop, but it’s influence and sound was copied and polished up for many of the stadium acts of the 90s to fill the airwaves with anthemic, more accessible versions of the genre.
With the arrival of the internet, the shoegaze genre was once again resurrected with many bands and record labels no longer reliant on the corporate friendly music press and radio. Alongside labels such as Sonic Cathedral, artists like Ulrich Schnauss, The Radio Dept, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Sigur Ros, Maps, Deerhunter, School of Seven Bells and M83 were all emerging and citing the original shoegaze records as influences and so the scene grew again.
Reunion tours of My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive and Ride also gathered a huge amount of attention and in many cases bands played to larger crowds that they did in 1991, this also gave audiences a chance to re-evaluate those wonderful records.
After last years Beautiful Noise film, now for the first time a box set is to be released that captures most of those bands together with many rarities you may never have heard before, including Creation bands like Medicine, Moonshake and a pre-Creation The Boo Radleys.

If you are a psych/funk/jazz/prog/latin/soul/African/bla bla bla style record collector in this day and age, you could easily tend to get "compilation record saturation fever". Stuff is so plentiful nowadays, lavish fat gatefolds stuffed with 200 gram slabs o' pristine wax, nice color booklets in accompaniment...very hard to resist these things. Wax collectors usually don't. As you can see from my listings, I'm in that boat, and far beyond my disposable income limit. This one has all the trappings to put a mark like me flying to grab this off the racks like a moth suckin' neon. Triple gatefold, nice heavy wax, nice book, I gotta get that, and just look at those freaky Indonesians on the cover in those tripped out pastel getups, maaan. How's the music? Pretty damn good I gotta say. Waaay better than I expected it to be and in fact so good, I was listening to it amongst other stuff in the same vein and about halfway thru Side 2, I'm saying to myself, "Wow this is from 70's Indonesia?!" as in some of this has no business being as good as it is coming from that time and place which makes this all the more amazing. Bottom line is if you liked Shark Move and Ariesta Birawa Group (both represented here) from hearing their Shadoks releases, you should grab this, as many of the of the other tracks easily best the best of those 2 groups' reissues. A really consistent listen for a 3LP set.
