In 2007, Matthew Barney and Jonathan Bepler began a new collaborative project inspired by American author Norman Mailer's 1983 novel Ancient Evenings, set in pharaonic Egypt. Beautifully woven, complex and subtle, this film captures an essence of NYC after 9/11. A great script, some stunning photography, an excellent score that helps tie it all together, and a great ensemble cast make this small film seem quite large. The emotions that bubble under the surface, only sometimes breaking through, give this film its strength and its power. Different stories of different people all struggling with day to day life sharing the common experience of being New Yorkers post 9/11. The references to what happened are almost all unspoken, evoked through the images displayed or the background sounds, yet there is no doubt that what happened is a force in the lives of all of these people. Intelligent film-making at its best.

Martha Horgan is mentally slow. She lives with her aunt Frances. She is known for NEVER lying. This causes her to get fired from her job; she tells on 1 of the other store employees, Getso, for taking 20 dollars out of the cash register. The owner thinks MARTHA did it, her being mentally slow and all. Back at the house, Mackey, who does odd jobs hears that Frances needs a worker to fix her porch. He ends up working there, only to become intimately involved with Martha. He is attracted to her naivete.

一帮来自民主法制健全国家——美国的女人到另外一个相对落后的国家去领养孩子。(美国的发展现状决定了领养的程序比较繁琐，大概需要长达几年甚至十几年的排队什么的，不遵照程序大概会构成刑事违法，搞得这帮美国女人都要跑到国外去找孩子，并且个个战战兢兢的……
落后国家的人们很friendly也很canny(一切看在钱的份上),她们把这帮美国女人招待的很好，让她们无休止的等待，很明显在她们这个国家抱走一个小孩不用什么手续也不是很麻烦，但是她们装作好像事情很大条的样子留着这帮女人从中挣钱取酒店费和餐费。
这些身处异地，被各种问题(主要是与领养相关的意识形态的问题，诸如宗教、伦理、法律)困扰的女人自然而然的走到了一起，她们同病相怜，又各自有各自的立场，甚至有些人对别人怀有狭隘的敌意，大概是老认为别人抱养了孩子等于自己失去了一个机会的那个味道(在我看来这些女人都很不一样，有的尖酸刻薄，有的单纯善良，有学院派风格的，有市井大妈门派的)。
影片通过这个落后国家的民生状况和这帮怀抱着美好的领养愿望美国女人的行为活动的比照，用心良苦的反映了一些问题，不仅仅是culture shock,也有美国社会内部一些分歧的体现。
是个不错的人文好片。
