「奧斯汀小姐」指的是珍‧奧斯汀的姊姊卡珊卓拉，故事發生於1840年，卡珊卓拉回到了金特伯里村（Kintbury），来到她的朋友福爾（Fowle）的家（同時也是已故未婚夫湯瑪斯‧福爾 Thomas Fowle 的親戚）。當時伊萊莎‧福爾與她們兩姊妹是好友，卡珊卓拉知道福爾家一定還有妹妹的信件，因此她前來拜訪伊萊莎的女兒伊莎貝拉，想要找回這些信件。這部作品很大的用意在於揭示為什麼卡珊卓拉在珍死後要燒毀她大部分的信件，這也是學界一直覺得很困擾的問題。

據傳珍一生寫過3000封以上的信，但目前只留下約160封左右，只用來送給家庭成員留念。隨著卡珊卓拉在找信的過程中，她也回想起年輕時與珍的生活。在奧斯汀家八個孩子中，只有她們倆是女孩，因此感情格外緊密。在珍的一生中，卡珊卓拉可以說是她最親密的摯友與姊姊，當卡珊卓拉的未婚夫湯瑪斯於海外宣教病故後，她也從未結婚，與珍一起終老，談到珍‧奧斯汀的一生與情感所依，卡珊卓拉佔有十分重要的地位。
